“What should I wear for my session?” is one of my most asked questions. So I would love to help you figure out how to dress the best for your photo session!
Here are some helpful hints to think about when picking out your outfits:
Wear clothing that reflects your personal style or a nice version of what you would normally wear. You will find that your images will feel more authentic and you will be more comfortable when you and your family come in clothing that you wear everyday!
Layer it up!
Layers add visual interest and depth to your images. So bring on the cardigans, jackets, scarves, chunky necklaces, and don’t forget to bring some fun accessories, like hats, floral headbands, funky shoes, suspenders or other fun jewelry!
Keep it Simple!
This may sound like the opposite of what I just said about layers but what I mean is that you should try to wear solid colors or simple patterns and use your accessories to add a pop of color and design. Refrain from wearing busy designs, large logos, or prints on shirts. This will draw the eye to that article of clothing in every shot instead of the people.
Choose a color scheme!
This mainly applies to family sessions or engagements. Choose 2 main colors and possibly a highlight color to incorporate into all of your outfits. Refrain from being too matchy-matchy as this will make your pictures look dated and stiff. Have fun with your colors! For newborn sessions I believe it is best to stick with a neutral and light colored color palette. This keeps your pictures soft and sweet with your new little one.
Here are some great color palette ideas to choose from: grey/navy/orange, brown/ivory/rose, teal/yellow/navy, purple/green/blue, grey/red. (Utilize Pinterest for more ideas!)
**Bonus hint: Once you get your images back you will want to print them and post them all over your home! Think about the colors that you decorate with so that your images look cohesive with your regular decor.
Extra thoughts to look your absolute best:
- Figure out the person in your bunch that is the hardest to dress. In my family that would be me since I am surrounded by boys. 😃 So I pick out what I want to wear first and then find things for my people to wear based on that. For others, it may be a size issue or you may have a child who is super picky about what they wear. So find the outfit for that person first and then base everyone else’s clothes around them.
- Wear clothing that makes you feel good. Wear colors that work with your skin and hair coloring and fits that flatter. If you don’t know what that is for you, then I recommend checking in with a trusted friend or family member. If you feel good about how you look then you will feel more at ease during your session and love your pictures even more when you get them back!
- Hire someone to do your hair and make-up. Or you could even hire someone to help be your personal shopper or create outfits for you right from your own closet.
One of my dearest friends and college roomies, Camie, has a company called Luxe-Wise based out of Mississippi. On her site you will find great make-up and style tutorials you can use as you get ready for your session. Here is one of her posts on what to wear for your portrait session. OR you could even hire her to do a Connected Consultation. Seriously, go check it out and get some Luxe-Wise love!!
